Inefficiency of Strategy-Proof Rules for Pure Exchange Economies
نویسنده
چکیده
In his pioneering article, (in ‘‘Decision and Organization’’ (C. B. McGuire and R. Radner, Eds.), pp. 297–336, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1972) Hurwicz establishes that there is no strategy-proof, Pareto-efficient, and individually rational rule for pure exchange economies with two agents and two goods, provided that the domain includes a sufficiently wide class of classical preferences. In this article, we extend his result to pure exchange economies with any finite number of agents and goods. We establish that (i) there is no strategy-proof, Pareto-efficient, and individually rational rule on the class of classical, homothetic, and smooth preferences; and (ii) there is no strategy-proof, Pareto-efficient, and symmetric rule on the same class of preferences. Note on social choice allocation in exchange economies with many agents
In this paper we show that in pure exchange economies there exists no Pareto efficient and strategy-proof allocation mechanism which ensures positive consumptions to all agents. We also show that Pareto efficient, strategy-proof, and non-bossy allocation mechanism is dictatorial. We further show that if there exists three agents, then the allocation given by a Pareto efficient, strategy-proof, ...
متن کاملEfficient and strategy-proof allocation mechanisms in economies with many goods
Following the seminal work of Hurwicz (1972), the manipulability and efficiency of allocation mechanisms in pure exchange economies have been studied intensively. Zhou (1991) established that any Pareto-efficient and strategy-proof allocation mechanism is dictatorial in exchange economies with two agents having classical (i.e., continuous, strictly monotonic, and strictly convex) preferences. T...
متن کاملImpossibility results for parametrized notions of efficiency and strategy-proofness in exchange economies
We study a standard model of exchange economies with individual endowments. It is well known that no rule is individually rational, e cient, and strategyproof. In order to quantify the extent of this impossibility, we parametrize axioms on allocation rules. Given an axiom A, a parametrization of A is a continuum of axioms {δ-A}δ∈[0,1] such that (i) δ-A is equivalent to A only if δ = 1; (ii) δ-A...
متن کاملAsymptotically Strategy-Proof Walrasian Exchange
In smooth exchange economies with a continuum of agents, any Walrasian mechanism is Pareto efficient, individually rational, anonymous, and strategy-proof. Barberà and Jackson’s recent results imply that no such efficient mechanism is the limit of resource-balanced, individually rational, anonymous and non-bossy strategy-proof allocation mechanisms for an expanding sequence of finite economies....
متن کاملAlmost-dominant Strategy Implementation
Though some economic environments provide allocation rules that are implementable in dominant strategies (strategy-proof), a significant number of environments yield impossibility results. On the other hand, while there are quite general possibility results regarding implementation in Nash or Bayesian equilibrium, these equilibrium concepts make strong assumptions about the knowledge that playe...
